I may have gone about this backwards!
I was at my LYS with my friend ames this week. While happily browsing, I came across a Cascade Sierra yarn I fell in love with. The tag said Cherry, but I didn't pay attention to the number - I'm thinking 19, possibly 39. It was a bright beautiful red that looked awesome next to my skin and I decided right then and there I was going to make a sweater of some sort.
So now I'm browsing Ravelry for sweaterish types of tops. The library where I work is always warm, so the wool/cotton blend with short sleeves (possibly extended to three-quarter length) should be perfect for fall, winter and spring. I found three I like that work with the yarn, but can't quite decide among them yet. I need something easy, that isn't too easy, challenging, that isn't too challenging and has a pattern that shapes at the waist because I'm not skilled enough to do that myself yet.
I like the Krista lingerie type. The lace pattern is apparently easily memorized and repeated throughout. It's a challenge, but not an overwhelming one. But it's very much a spring/summer top, and it's October. However, at the rate I knit....
I've been eyeing the Green Gable since I joined Ravelry a year ago. It's generally lauded as a great first sweater, so yay! A few people have created cute 3/4 length sleeves, some with bell sleeves. It's certainly simple, knit mostly in the round with little seaming. However, except for the lace panel at the top, it's just plain old stockinette. I can't decide if that's good (quick knitting for the knitting group) or really boring.
The last one is Tempting. Again, simple - knit in the round. Bit more interesting than the Green Gable, since there's ribbing. It'll be nice and fitted, since the ribbing allows stretch. I am, sadly, the type to wear a ribbon around my neck. (Green for Christmas! Black for going out! Pink for every day? Hmm.) Not sure if I could do longer sleeves, though - again, a very spring/summer top. Although again, the way I knit and the way my attention wanders. LOL
Huh. Even though Tempting was my last choice, it's kind of becoming my first one. Things to ponder!
